Carmen Carr
Southside High School Sophomore wins
2006 Jr. Miss Rodeo Alabama!

Out of 13 contestants, Carmen Carr of Southside won the title of Jr. Miss Rodeo Alabama at the Annual Southeastern Livestock Exposition SLE Rodeo in Montgomery, Alabama on March the 11th.  The pageant began in 1959 and is the largest pageant in the United States.  The pageant consists of Horsemanship Competition, Speech, Modeling and Interview.  Carmen contacted me several weeks ago for help in preparation for the pageant.  After she gave me ideas of what she wanted her speech to consist of, I composed a speech elaborating on the great aspects of Gadsden/Etowah County.  We worked on her speech delivery and on modeling.  Carmen was a joy to work with.  She was very perceptive and very talented.  She immediately integrated every instruction I gave her about vocal inflections, body language and persuasion.  She is a great representative, not only of our area, but for our state as well!
Carmen will represent her home State of Alabama in many events and PRCA Rodeos.  Carmen also won the Miss Southern Roughstock competition in October in Cleveland Tennessee.  She also will represent the Southern Roughstock Rodeo all over the Southern States this year carrying her hometown flag and the Dodge flag.  Carmen's parents are Roger and Lou Ann Carr.  You may learn more about the pageants at www.bamabeef.org and www.Brianhousebuckingbulls.com

Carmen's Speech.....

Hi, my name is Carmen Carr and I am a Junior at Southside High School.

My home town of Gadsden, AL., nestled in the Heart of Dixie, is home to some very remarkable attractions.

Legend has it that the breathtaking beauty of Noccalula Falls, the 100 foot waterfall here does not compare to the beauty of the Indian Girl for which it is named.  According to the story, Noccalula flung herself over the rushing waters of the falls rather than betray her true love and marry a man of her father’s choosing.  In addition to the falls, the beautiful park that surrounds it contains caves, walking trails, Indian carvings, an old aboriginal fort, an abandoned dam, Civil War carvings, and a huge botanical garden.  In addition, the entire park is completely illuminated at Christmas with millions of lights making it a winter wonderland.

There is a saying that blue grass is not a color, it’s a feeling.  That is certainly the case of Foggy Hollow.  The first weekend in June and the last weekend in September, the quiet community of Webster’s Chapel on the outskirts of Gadsden comes alive with the string sounds of bluegrass.  Thousands flock to the 12-acre farm to hear such greats as Alison Krauss and Tony Rice.

If it’s just a simple ride through the country side you choose, you could pass by one of the three major crop growers in Alabama, the Sewell Farms.

Spring finds Gadsden crawling with people from all over the US coming together for the annual Riverfest.  Such greats as Travis Tritt, Collin Raye, Sawyer Brown, Alabama, Toby Keith and many others have drawn crowds of 50,000.  This great festival is in its 21st year and stronger than ever!

The early history of Gadsden speaks of street car bells, the churning waters of paddle wheelers, rebel yells, the Trail of Tears, and railroad whistles.  Today, Gadsden, in Etowah County, is a thriving county of a hundred thousand hospitable people all working together to keep the “Etowah Experience” a way of life for ourselves and our visitors. Other great Gadsden attractions include:

The Coosa River complete with the steam powered Alabama Princess Riverboat

Mountain Top Flea Market – the largest in the south

Lookout Mountain and Scenic Parkway

Home of Gold City Quartet

All God’s Children Family Reunion

And….the beginning point of the 450 mile yard sale!!

Ya’ll come!!

What many call talent is nothing more than doing continuous hard work in the right way!
